I think both of them are both heroes. Charlotte rebelled against Captain Jaggery and saved the crew and helped them. Zachariah helped Charlotte escape from jail, steal the key and gave her food. They both did their part in helping the ship, themselves and each other survive the storm and Captain Jaggery's wrath/revenge. They are sort of like a team and help everyone on the ship out. They are both the main and best heroes to me.

It is interesting that you thought they were both tied for being a big hero.

I think Charlotte was the biggest hero in this book. I think this because she was the only person on the boat brave enough to stand up to captain Jaggery. In fact at the end she did what no crew member could do, kill him. But when I say this, I'm not saying that Zachariah isn't a hero. But he is number two in my books.

I think that they are both heros in their own ways. Charlotte stood up for herself and the crew. She helped the crew. Zacariah got Charlotte out of jail and he fed her. Zacariah also payed his respects to cranick even though captain jaggery was right there. They are both heros in their own ways, they both helped the crew on the seahawk.

I think Charlotte was a bigger hero in the sense that she was the one would stood up to the captain. On the other hand though Zachariah was definitely a hero too.

I think that the hero of The True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle was Charlotte Doyle. Charlotte Doyle had changed her personality on the Seahawk to fit in with the crew. Charlotte Doyle had the guts to stand up to Captain Jaggery and risk her own life. However, Zachariah was always nice to Charlotte Doyle and got Charlotte Doyle out of jail.

I think Zachariah is the biggest hero of the novel. I really don’t see how Charlotte was very heroic. I mean, she was actually partially at fault for some of the chaotic occurrences on the boat. I wouldn’t say standing up to Captain Jaggery is heroic and she didn’t actually kill Captain Jaggery herself. As I said in an earlier posting, my definition of heroic is the act of being a hero; the act of doing the right thing no matter how hard the task or how much is being given up in less than ideal circumstances for the benefit of others. By this definition, standing up to Captain Jaggery is not considered a heroic act. She called him a few names, which I would say is in fact sinking down to Jaggery’s level, and refused to leave the crew, which is admirable but still not heroic. When Jaggery died, it wasn’t Charlotte who killed him; it was the wind and the current of the water. She just happened to be what he was after when he fell into the water. Do her actions really fit the definition of heroic? Zachariah, on the other hand, helped to lead a rebellion against Jaggery and kept his dignity before he was whipped and supposedly died. Zachariah was planning on helping past, present and future crew members of the Seahawk and protect them from Jaggery, by staying in the brig until they docked in Rhode Island and then going to the authorities. He was willing to stay in this dark, musty, enclosed room for a long time just so he could get Jaggery locked up and make him pay for his actions. This task was extremely hard and very risky, but Zachariah did it anyway because he knew it was their best option. Zachariah, in a way, gave up his life when he allowed himself to be whipped and assumed to be dead. What’s more is he knew exactly what he was giving up, but was still determined to complete his mission. I think we can all agree that the circumstances were far from ideal as the brig was dirty and muggy, not somewhere anyone would want to stay for a short period of time, let alone a long period. Zachariah did all of these things for other people. Even when he saved Charlotte during the hurricane, his actions were heroic. He knew he had to help his crew by being up on deck, he risked the chance of being found by Captain Jaggery, but he still did it, the only reason he did it was to help out Charlotte and to save her from falling and this was all during a hurricane. I personally believe Zachariah is the biggest hero of the novel based on these facts.

I think Zachariah is the hero of this book because he stood up to the harsh and tempered Captain Jaggery. Even though he knew that he might get seriously injured or even killed, he stood up for him and his crew members which was very heroic in my opinion.

I think that Zachariah was the bigger hero of the novel. I think this because he "died" in a noble manner in which he did not fight back when Captain Jaggery asked him questions and then whipped him. He also SURVIVED those whippings, and went on the cut himself out of the net and get back aboard the ship, which to me is amazing. He then helped Charlotte prove that she was not guilty. Charlotte "felt bad" for the crew after she ratted them out to Jaggery, so she joined the the crew to fill up his position, which I do not think is very heroic.

I think the biggest hero in the book is Charlotte and not Zachariah. i say that because, even though Charlotte was a girl and she was young, she still stood up to Captain Jaggery. Not one person in the crew' set aside Zachariah, stood up to Captain Jaggery. I think both of these people are heros, but in my opinion Charlotte is the biggest hero. i would put Zachariah as number two.

I agree with you $UPERMAN. Even though Zacharaiah was the only member from the crew to stand up to Captain Jaggery, he has been on the boat for many, many ........ years and he stands up to him know. I mean, Charlotte hasn't even been on the boat for a year (at that point in the story) and she stands up to him in no time. If I was in her place, I would have never been able to do such a thing, being aware that my life could be at stake. Yes, I do agree that Zachariah did a very brave and heroic thing by standing up to Jaggerry. He also had the guts to do this while no other crew member did. But overall, I still belive that Charlotte was more heroic. (excluding the fact that Charlotte was the main character of the book)

How do you know Zachariah has not stood up to Captain Jaggery before? Hasn't the crew already tried to make Jaggery pay on land? Is that not standing up to him? Also, the whole crew (excluding Hollybrass and Keetch), were in favour of performing mutiny. I would also like to point out that Charlotte was friends with Jaggery at the beginning and trusted him at the beginning. I don't think that is considered standing up to him in no time. It took a while and even then, she technically didn't actually stand up to him.

I think that zachariah was the real hero of the book over Charlotte cause she did really do anything that super hero worthy realy but did stand against jaggery. Although thats really it but zachariah not only went rebellian against jaggery and pretented death to try to over throw mr jaggery. Also went through the trouble to save Charlotte even to blow his whole cover. Everyone is saying oh Charlotte killed captain Jaggery but she didnt he just fell on the bowsprit trying to kill Charlotte so in pretty shure i read the book right and remember right he fell of the pole. So I think that Charlotte did nothing much to be really called a hero but call jaggery few names suposingly killed jaggery. So nothing that super heroic but zachariah on the other hand saved charlotte giving up his safty also standing up to jagggery twice. So i yhink thats Zachariah is the true hero.

I think the bigger hero of the book is Charlotte. Charlotte and Zachariah both did heroic things, but Charlotte did more. Charlotte went aboard the Seahawks as an innocent lady and left it a captain. She had to make the choice of telling Captain Jaggery about the round robin, she had to climb up the royal yard to join the crew, she had to work as a crew member and do men's work, she was accused of murder and put on trial where she was found guilty, she had to stay in a cell on a ship and wait to be hanged, and she was chased by Captain Jaggery leading him to his death. She has to do many sneaky things that could effect more than one life.( sneaking out of cell and getting the key from the captains daughters portrait) Zachariah missed a lot since he was in hiding, and even when he came out of hiding he didn't help out much either.

I respect your opinion, but disagree with it. Charlotte did do some brave things, but were they really that heroic? Was she really considered a hero on the ship? Most of the stuff she did was actually protecting herself. Also, when you said Zachariah didn't help much, what about when he saved Charlotte during the hurricane? Plus, his whole objective to be in hiding was to help out the crew and protect them from Captain Jaggery. I think he did some pretty heroic things, even while he was in hiding.

I would like to remind you Annie that Charlotte is NINE years old for crying out loud! She has no experince over life threatning sutuations like going against Jaggery. She was an innocent little girl who has never been on board. Unlike Charlotte, Zachariah is very old, and is fully aware of the happenings and cosquences of captain Jaggery and the boat.

I know where your coming from when you say that Cookie Monster but, Charlotte isn't that young in the story, she is somewhere in her teens by the time she enters the Seahawk (possibly 13-14 years old).

Yes, she is thirteen. However, if you are truly a hero, age does not matter. You could be five years old or ninety five years old and still be heroic. If you were going to make your decision based on age, how about the fact that Zachariah is eighty years old? His actions put his own life danger, but he did them anyway despite his age. Plus, Charlotte didn't actually stand up to Captain Jaggery. She just defied him. To a lesser extent, it's like if your parents tell you to do your homework, but you don't. Are you standing up to them or just defying them? As you pointed out, Charlotte had no idea what was going on on the boat. She was inexperienced and naive while Zachariah was wise and knew what he was doing. Which sounds like a better hero to you? One who is aware of the consequences but still goes ahead with his plans or one who doesn't know what to do or the price that could be paid for the wrong action?

They are both the biggest heroes of the story if you think about it. Charlotte needs Zachariah just as much as Zachariah needs Charlotte since Charlotte is the person who does the action and makes the difference like standing up to jaggery, Trying to steal the weapons and more, while Zachariah is the man who creates the plans and warnings for Charlotte to follow because without his plans and guidelines Charlotte could have been killed a long time ago such as when he informed her, while in the brig, on how to get out of being hanged. It's like Charlotte is the main muscle of the group, without her the plans Zachariah creates will have no effect since no one can carry them out, and Zacharaih is the brains of the group, he makes the plans so without him Charlotte will be lost even if she is capable of doing tasks, so it's like a mutual relationship the both need each other so they can be heroes otherwise they would be just as heroic as their fellow shipmates.

I think the main hero is Zachariah, but Charlotte in her own way was a hero as well. Zachariah was the one who helped out Charlotte on the ship even though he knew he should not be talking to her because she was of a higher status. He gave her food when she was hungry and a dirk to protect herself. He was also very brave and confident when he walked right up to Cranick when he got shot knowing that he could die as well. When he was given the punishment by Captain Jaggery he accepted it quietly without saying anything to Captain Jaggery. Later on in the book when he was supposed to be dead but instead climbed up the ropes on the ship to help Charlotte out. In the end, Zachariah is the most heroic because even though he knows he could get in trouble, he always ends up helping them out especially Charlotte.

Zachariah is the biggest hero of this novel, in my opinion. First of all, Zachariah wanted to give Cranick his final farewell and he knew Jaggery would give him a punishment for this. Zachariah also forgave Charlotte for reporting on him and the round robin. He also forgave his crew for not helping him (so he didn't blame anyone, even though they were to blame). Also, Zachariah helped the crew by being the second one in charge so he took the beating for the crew after Jaggery had killed Cranick. Also, he helped the crew by staying hidden. Zachariah did many things to help the crew, so this is why I believe Zachariah is more heroic than Charlotte Doyle.

Chuck E. Muckle I think that even though she is a teenager, she is still very young and she is definetly younger compared to all of the grown men on board. (including Zachariah)
Charlotte Doyle

I think that the biggest hero of the book is Charlotte because she is the one who has to break into Captain Jaggery's safe and almost get hanged and she was the one who killed Captain Jaggery in the end of the book. Leave a Reply. |
