At the end of part one, Charlotte tried to apologize to Captain Jaggery for whipping him and pleaded for his forgiveness. Jaggery did not accept her apology and in fact told her that she was no longer under his protection. It was then that she realized she must join the crew. Charlotte then begged for their forgiveness while trying to convince them that she was no longer loyal to Captain Jaggery. Unfortunately, they did not believe her. Charlotte tried to think of some way to show the crew that she truly was sorry and she really did want to be a part of them. The only way she knew how to allow them to at least give her a chance was to dress in the sailor clothes Zachariah had made for her. It wasn't just the fact that she was now wearing the clothes, but it was a symbol of her commitment to the crew and being a part of it. Charlotte made this decision because she knew it was her last hope at making it off the ship alive. Also, she was disgusted with the captain and wanted to join the rebellion against him. I believe that there was a slight need for a sense of belonging there as well. I agree with her decision because I think she has done what is best for her safety while acting in favour of her beliefs. With the crew, she will be as safe as she could be on the Seahawk as they have the numbers and they can protect her. She also is going against Captain Jaggery because she believes he is a ruthless, awful coward. I would have done exactly the same thing. I would've shown my full commitment and capability by dressing in the sailor clothes and climbing the mast, for actually the same reasons as Charlotte: to be in the safety and protection of the crew, to go against Captain Jaggery and to have somewhere to belong. I think she definitely made the right choice in joining the crew.

Joining the crew is certainly a risky move. Who knows how they will treat her? Will they hold a grudge for the reporting of the round robin? Will they take out their anger towards her father on her? However as you point out, she is no longer under the protection of the captain. So perhaps her best option is to try and make peace with the crew. You take a strong position and you defend it well. Let's see if other students agree with you.

Wow, this is really good!
Also didn't Zachriah die at Captain Jaggery's "hands" as well? Wouldn't that steam her motivation by a mile too?

In my opinion, Charlotte joined the crew because it was her only decision to make it all the way across the ocean without dying of starvation. Also I think she wanted to get back at Jaggery because he was rude to her after she tried to defend Zachariah. Lastly she joined the crew because she felt that Zachariah's death was all her fault and she wanted to join the crew so they wouldn't be down men. I think what she did was the right thing to do, because she now despises Jaggery, and so does the rest of the crew, so they all have something in common. I would have done the same thing as her because in that situation it would have been the right thing to do.

When Charlotte Doyle decided to join the crew at the end of part 1 I thought that it was a good decision to make. She would be able to live on the Seahawk with food and tea in her system. Charlotte Doyle can also seek her revenge on Captain Jaggery for being so mean to everyone but, what if something bad happened if she did decide to seek revenge on the captain like when the crew tried to do it? Or if the crew forced Charlotte Doyle to do something that she did not want to do? Then say that she is a part of the crew and has to do this or else...?

You make a good point. When the crew tried to seek revenge on Captain Jaggery, it turned out very badly. Cranick got shot and got thrown over board and Zachariah got whipped and was "thrown overboard." What might happen if Charlotte tries to do the same thing? Captain Jaggery already has a bone to pick with Charlotte, maybe their "relationship" will get worse.
I think that joining the crew was a good decision that Charlotte made. At the end of part one, Captain Jaggery was furious with Charlotte because she whipped him in the face and she interfered with the death of Zachariah. If Charlotte hadn't made an attempt to join the crew, she could've gotten herself in even bigger trouble with Captain Jaggery later on in the book. I think she decided to join the crew because she knew if she didn't, Captain Jaggery could easily try to get rid of her or hurt her, and the crew would probably try to do that too. Also, she knew that she needed protection and food to survive 2 months on the ship, and the crew prepares and makes the food and they can offer protection from Captain Jaggery. With the crew's protection, they probably wouldn't allow such a thing to happen to Charlotte. I fully agree with Charlotte's decision. Trying to join the crew and trying to get on their good side is a good idea. At the end of part one, both the crew and Captain Jaggery are annoyed and very infuriated at Charlotte. It's kind of obvious that Captain Jaggery isn't going to give in and take Charlotte under his wing, so she is trying to show Captain Jaggery that she is capable of befriending the crew and helping them out. Charlotte is very serious about this commitment to the crew, because she put on the crew's uniform that Zachariah gave her. Charlotte is trying to fit in and get into the crew, but they are not giving in or listening to her. I would have done the same thing as Charlotte. Captain Jaggery has weapons in his cabin, and he is not afraid to use them. Charlotte is already on his bad side, and she doesn't want to get in deeper trouble. Charlotte is trying to make a commitment to the crew and that is a smart move. That is exactly what I would have done. I would have put on my sailor outfit and try to talk to the crew about why I should be a part of them. If they refused, I could try to do some things around the ship to help out. That's what Charlotte should do too. If the crew doesn't accept her, then she can do things around the ship anyways, even if the crew doesn't allow it.

Charlotte joins the crew at the end of part one in an act of defiance and valor, as well as a shot at suspected survival. At first glance it may seem like an ideal decision to stay under Captain Jaggery protection and hide from his terror and treachery, however upon further inspection Captain Jaggery is ruthless and unpredictable and can not hold equal partnerships, but rather. Despite Captain Jaggery's seemingly cold, controlling, masked with genuine personality exterior, there's the cold, savage, heartless, lacking proper leadership, intractable and unforgiving interior. If he feels that Charlotte is associating herself with the crew to plot his demise or feels she knows too much about his secrets which was veiled by him only he'd probably kill her, or worse torture her in some kind of cruel, monstrous way like starving her or hanging her. At least Charlotte has a higher chance of befriending the crew. Also, the crew has strength in numbers. Captain Jaggery relies on his crew;. If he kills every single one of them off, he'd clearly die slowly. He'd rather have utter carnage with a hope of surviving rather then no hope of surviving, knowing him. It's like having an enemy that you can't beat nor can they beat you and you're going to have to stick together until the end if you even want to get close to finishing each other off. Charlotte was wise when she made this decision, since not only does this strengthen the crew tremendously but also lets more of the crew live since Charlotte now can easily tell the crew Jaggery's secrets. She can also tell her father of all the horrendous things he did to her only companions. Captain Jaggery is busted if he messes with Charlotte. Charlotte was clearly aggravated by Jaggery's actions and no longer wished to associate herself with him. Defying him was life risking but at the same time the safer choice if she survives. I firmly agree with this since I would judge from what I myself know about him. Sure maybe he has a reason for this, but if it kills people you got to act quick or you maybe the next victim in his untamed rage. She also sought out companionship as well. After all it is going to be 3 months of being isolated from society. This is also her way of avenging Zachriah by tearing down Captain Jaggery brick by brick. Personally I wouldn't hesitate choosing the side I thought was right. Strength in numbers, I say!

I think that charlotte made a good desicion,i would have done the same. Charlotte tried apologising to the captain, but he didnt accept it. Since the captain refused the apology, making friends with the crew was a great idea. I think that once charlotte found that Jaggery was a crazy murderer, charlotte probably thought that the crew was right.

I don't think Captain Jaggery is a "crazy murderer." Sure, he killed 2 men, but he had a decent reason to do so. Cranick in the the past, wasn't a good crew member to Captain Jaggery. So when he sneaked aboard the Seahawk, Captain Jaggery got fed up with him. Captain Jaggery was going to kill one crew member anyways, so he picked Zachariah. Still, none of that was necessary.

I think she made this decision because she was very sorry for her doing and messing up the mutiny and she kinda feels that the death of both Crannik and Zachariah were kinda her fault cause she exposed the round robin. Also how she wouldn't choose a person to take the punishment of 50 lashes. So the only way she think to make up the things she has done to them was to join the crew and carry the weight of one of the crew. If i were Charlotte i would not have made the same decision as her because of how Jaggery treats the crew and he said he would treat her as a man and an equal to them and would take all the punishments the same as the crew would. Also be called Mister Charlotte even though she is a Lady. Although considering the situation and the spot she has put her self in i guess it was going to be the bets choice for her and would teach her some very valuable life lessons and how its like to be treated as an equal instead of getting people doing stuff for her.

I think Charlotte made the right decision. I mean captain Jaggery is wicked and he did not treat her right, he never would. I think it's great she went to the crew. At least she'll have real friends who care about her and that respect her. They won't abuse her in anyway. They know how to treat a person since they're all in this together. The captain and crew are enemies and Charlotte is better off staying with the people who wouldn't sacrifice her. Who knows if at one part Captain Jaggery decides to kill her. He is filled with pure hatred towards these people. He cannot be trusted. The crew is like a family and they would never do anything to hurt each other or her. All in all, Charlotte absolutely made the right decision. I completely and utterly agree with her. I mean I wouldn't want to get hurt or get sacrificed by a devil because I made one wrong choice.

I like how you said "At least she'll have real friends who care about her and that respect her." It changes the tone of her joining the crew for protection and survival. It can be a long, lonely, never-ending ride across the Atlantic Ocean without friends or anyone to care for you. In part one, she had Captain Jaggery as a friend, or so she thought. Now that she has joined the crew, she respects them and they respect her. In a way, they actually are friends. Your statement exposes the emotional aspect of Charlotte's decision to join the crew.

Charlotte chose to be a part of the crew because, she had whipped Captain Jaggery on his face accidentally when she was trying save Zachariah. When she went to ask for forgiveness from Captain Jaggery, he told her that she would not be under his protection. When she went back to her room, she probably realized that Captain Jagerry would make the crew work even harder because they lost a crew member because of her. So, Charlotte must have decided that she should ask for forgiveness by helping them out on the ship so that they would treat her nicely if Captain Jaggery did not. Also Charlotte must have decided that she would have to ask them for forgiveness anyways if she ever wanted to have something to eat and taken care of if Captain Jaggery ever tried to harm her.She has made the right decision by joining the crew because by now she must have realized that they are the ones who she should trust because Captain Jaggery has obviously no feelings for anyone especially the crew. Also she will be able to prove herself to the crew that she too can do all the things that they do to run the ship if they would just help her out a bit in learning how to do everything. To prove that she can be a part of their crew, she wears the sailor clothes that Zachariah made for her. If I were Charlotte, then I think I would have joined the crew so that I was not alone for the rest of the voyage.

If I were in Charlotte's shoes I would have done exactly what she did. She made a wise and risky move by joining the crew. Wise- because she knew that if there was a need, the crew could defend her and protect her or even go against Captain Jaggery. Risky- because she does not know exactly how well the crew will treat her. But I am assuming that the crew will treat her right because she whipped Captain Jaggery (which is a sign of hatred or dislikement) . The crew is also in favor of hating and disliking Caotain Jaggery. Charlotte had also pleaded Captain Jaggery for forgiveness, but later realized that if she returned back into Captain Jaggerry's rule the cycle would start all over again. The cycle of going against and regrettinng helping the crew. (which in most cases caused death) I think that this way Charlotte will stay protected and will still have the confidence of going against Captain Jaggery because she is in a group. However, it works both ways, Capatain Jaggerry is the Captain, he is in rule and now holds all weapons on board. He will definetly use them if he wants to . But I think that he won't use them on Charlotee intendedly but maybe by accidently, due to his uncontrolled anger management. He is aware that Charlotte is the daughter of one of his high regards in the company, but as in the past can get carried away by his anger. I also think that Charlotte will take advantage of this situation and try to create a strong and peacefull alliance between the crew and herself. That way when she is in danger the crew will have her back. I also think that Charlote showed lots of bravey recently, by climbing the ladder and whipping Captain Jaggerry. These actions will ceratinly reflect on the crew's decision as to why they should let Charlotte join the crew.

I like how you said "These actions will ceratinly reflect on the crew's decision as to why they should let Charlotte join the crew." It shows how Charlotte didn't just join the crew. She expressed interest in joining them, but actually had to earn her spot, like everyone else. I especially liked how you mentioned all the things she did to earn the trust and acceptance of the crew and then you ended it by saying how all these things helped her to do exactly that.

She joined the crew because captain jaggery wouldn't accept her.
The crew was all Charlotte had left if she wanted to stay alive.
I would have done the same thing because the crew was all that was left, and there's more of the crew so they can protect her
