I just heard some fabulous news yesterday: Soccer ball boy started talking this summer! His family is so happy. This is a huge breakthrough for him. You guys were a big part of making that happen. All the time you spent helping him, playing with him, dancing with him and simply interacting was so valuable for him. You brought him out of his shell and made him want to socialize more with the people around him. Thank you for being such a kind and caring class. This is just one more great achievement to add to One Division's legacy.

I am also glad to hear that you are trying out for sports teams and joining leadership programs. I enjoy reading your blog postings because this year's class hasn't quite got the hang of it yet. So keep me posted on all your beep tests, weight training and 2 km runs. Is gym really the hardest class in grade 8?

Well, it isn't the hardest class, but it seems like it because we aren't used to doing all of these things. I am actually getting used to the 2 km runs, believe it or not. My last time was 15:32 and today, I got 11:50!! I think the hardest classes are math and science, since we're doing dividing integers and physics!!! :(

Reply
Sherlock Holmes
10/2/2013 10:24:23 am
I watched a volleyball practice, and they hardly spike the ball at all. Well, that's for Grade 8's. The older grades tend to spike the ball more than the younger grades. And apparently, at our school the volleyball coach is very strict. When they're practicing, and someone misses the ball, they have to do 5 push ups.
Talena
10/2/2013 12:14:26 pm
Yes, it is way tougher than elementary volleyball. All the girls try to spike the ball and all try to do overhand serves but not all of them work out.
Molly
10/2/2013 10:47:09 am
I tried to tryout for the volleyball team a few weeks before, but they didn't accept me, just because I can't over hand serve (I think)! :(
But from what saw, lots of the players in grade 8, are very good at over hand serving, and the older grades always tend to spike the ball. But from the grade 8's games, and tournaments, I heard that they usually win at least 1-2 games, and got into 5th place over 12, in the tournament, so that is very good.

Today was Halloween Day, and there was also a person dressed up as Slenderman, minions, and a person in jail!! That is sooooooo...... cool!
My grade 12's students in the school, tried very hard to convince everybody, to ask for non-perusable foods for the food bank instead of candy. Every 3 cans that you hand in you will get a fair amount of candy for a trade! Isn't that such a good idea! I couldn't support that, because didn't go trick or treating tonight.

I am an escaped convict (line Sirius Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban). I have the striped-style jail suit with an identification number on the front. I also have handcuffs that I have broken out of, so they hang only from one wrist. It is very cool. One of the kindergartens thought I was a zebra though. I though that was so cute. I hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween night. Please stay away from firecrackers and fireworks. They seriously injure far too many teens this time of year.

Those marks sound pretty good to me. 90% in Humanities is not easy to achieve. I guess you must have a pretty tough science teacher though. What are you finding challenging about science? And what about high school has been harder than you expected?
Reply
Sherlock Holmes
11/7/2013 01:00:49 pm
I find it very easy to get good marks in Humanities, because my teacher (who I'm not going to name) explains everything very clearly and to the last detail. I actually have 90.1% and the top mark in the class is 90.4% so I'm working even harder to get top mark! In Science, my teacher is a strict person and is very strict about marking too. I do very well on all of the assignments, but it's the tests I don't do well on. I get A's on the assignments, but on the last few tests I got around 68% on them. I understand everything, I just have trouble remembering them for when the tests come. I thought the first few months of high school wouldn't be as hard, but the workload is insane!! This weekend, I have to finish 13 word processed questions for Humanities, 3 worksheets for Science, an 8 page booklet for Math and practice for at least 40 minutes for Band. The practicing pays off for Band, because I have one of the highest marks in the class, (92%)
Hagrid
11/8/2013 08:01:27 am
That is a lot of homework. Very few grade 8s are experiencing a workload like that. Most have one or two teachers that give a lot of homework. In fact, some grade 8s are reporting that they have less homework than in grade 7. High school can be like that. One term, you are swamped because of the teachers you got and the next term things are pretty easy. Let's hope your second term is much more manageable then this one. In the meantime, make the best of it. I like the way you are not letting tough science class affect your other courses. If you understand the concepts, don't worry if the tests are super tough. Just get through Science and shoot for that 90.4% in Humanities instead. In high school, all my science teachers were completely different from each other. Hopefully you'll get one with a more engaging approach in grade 9.

I'm having trouble in getting my P.E teacher to see that I work hard in gym. I can't seem to figure out what I did to make her dislike me. I try hard in P.E and I even got a 10.2 on the beep test. At the end of the day, my P.E mark is not as important to me as my marks in my academic classes but I am just very confused at why she is extra strict on me.

I was always one of the smallest students in my PE class. Some PE teachers recognized my work ethic and others only gave good marks to students they saw as "athletes." In the case of the latter, I felt the same way as you. My PE mark is not as important to me as my other marks. What matters is that my body is getting exercise and staying healthy. I'd be pretty proud of getting 10.2 on the beep test. Keep encouraging others and don't let your teacher get you down. How are your other classes going?

I actually think PE is important for my grades. My goal for this year is to get on the A Honour Roll, and to get on the A Honour Roll, you have to get a GPA of 3.5 or higher. I currently have a GPA of 3.7 and to maintain that, I have to keep getting at least a B in PE. I did the Beep Test and I tripped over my shoelaces and fell at 4.1 even though I wasn't even done. 4.1 isn't even a pass, so I'm really nervous.....
