I agree that Hatchet is interesting and has a good hook. I hope you answer Officer Delinko's question though.

I liked reading Hoot (my old reading group novel), better because there was more dialogue and it explains more about surviving middle school (secondary school), which can come in handy when we graduate elementary school.
I like how Hatchet gives more tips and ideas on how to survive in the Canadian wilderness, which can also be handy when we go campy in the summer time. But what I don't like so much about reading Hatchet is that, it seems to me that it doesn't have much actions as much as Hoot. When Roy (main character in Hoot) is always dealing with his bully Dana at school

I agree that there is a lot more to relate to in Hoot. We all go to school but not many of us have been stranded in the wilderness. Hoot also has a mystery and lots of humour.

I like hatchet alot better than Hoot
Because hatchet has less dialog and i dont really like reading it as much as the detail that the author has put it. It also has alot shorter chapters than hoot. But hoot and hatchet are kind of the same because in hoot Roy has a goal just like brian. And they are both mostly sounding like they are out doors

The point about the outdoors is a good one. So is the point about the goals. What is Brian's goal and what is Roy's goal?

What Hatchet and Holes have in common is they both find good ways to survive. Stanley found a useful wayto use the jars to store water and Brain found useful ways to use his hatchet either chopping wood or making types of tools.
I think I like holes better than Hatchet because hatchet seems pretty boring to me, holes was a very fun and exciting book and there was way more dialogue wich I loved. Hatchet doesn't have a lot of dialogue and its pretty boring how hes all alone on an island but its pretty interesting how he tries to surviveand find ways on finding and catching food. This book does give me some tips on how to survive if I was on an island alone.

You make an interesting connection between Holes and Hatchet. I pretty much agree with you. Hatchet is more interesting but Holes is more entertaining and engaging. I also think Holes has better flashbacks than Hatchet.

Both Hoot and Hatchet are great books but have way different plots, but do have some things in common. First of all they are near the wilderness. Roy is trying to save the owls that were in the wilderness while Brian is stranded in the wilderness. Along with that both Roy and Brian seem to have many things in common, personality wise. For example they both seem to be very determined. For Roy, he is determined to save the owls, while Brian is determined to survive alone in the wilderness. I prefer to read Hoot, just because i prefer a book that has a little bit more action and dialog. Although in Hatchet you sort of get to know the character more (Brian) because he is the only main character, to me I find reading books that have action and dialog and also leaves you thinking suites me better.

I like the point you make about them both being determined. Without their determination, Brian probably dies and so do the owls.

there are many things the compare with Hatchet and my first reading group book which was Hoot. Hoot and Hatchet both involve the wilderness, each book has many types of organisms such as owls, snakes etc. in hoot. Then in Hatchet there are turtles, bears, etc. Also in both of the books, the main characters which is Roy in Hoot, and Brian in Hatchet, they both brave and stand up for what is right, they are determined of what they are doing. They both find out ways to achieve there goals, and think positive and not negative.
In my opinion Hatchet is a great book, it's just that there isn't much dialogue, and there is only 1 character. i'd like the book to have more characters such as the other book "hoot". But i still find both books very intersting because of the action and investigations.

You make an interesting point. The way you study a book can affect the enjoyment that you get out of it. Does anybody else prefer the Hatchet classes and work to the Hoot classes and work? Why or why not?

I dont really think Hoot and Hatchet have a simialrity because Hoot takes place at school and Mother Paulas as Hatchet is all taken place in the wilderness. I kind of like Hatchet better then Hoot because getting lost in the wilderness is very unlikely for kids our age. It teaches us something that we will probably never experience in our life and it also tells us what there is to the world just other then our normal life. i dont really like hoot because its really boring and its something that we see everyday almost ( going to schoool and bullying) So i like Hatchet because its different from a typiacl life

You point out an interesting difference between the two books. Some people prefer to read about adventures in the world they know and others prefer to read about adventures in a world they don't know. Hoot appeals to the former and Hatchet appeals to the latter.

Coming from the group "The Upstairs Room" i like the book Hatchet better. I like Hatchet better because Hatchet has what he needs no survive and how he needs to do so. I like that even though he is only a 13 year old boy he knew what he needed to survive so he started off and looked for everything he needed and made a lot of things he needed to survive like shelter, fire and found food and water. Also i like how the story is only about Brian so you don't get confused by the other characters and don't have to remember a lot about the other characters in Hatchet. Something that Hatchet and The Upstairs Room has in common is that both books are about surviving.

I honestly like Hatchet better than Hoot. Hoot was an interesting book but it was quite predictable. Like it seemed to be obvious about what was going to happen. Hatchet catches my attention and these types of books are my style. Hatchet and Hoot dont have much in common but both of the main characters share their own thoughts frequently just as all other books do as well, but if I had to compare these two books, that's all I could say, as to me they both are very different.

I like Hoot a bit more to be honest. This book jumped straight into the story while Hoot talked a bit more into detail. It was just a lot more interesting to read hoot and thats why I kept reading it. Hatchet has a great story but its not easy to get hooked onto it.

Hoot and Hatchet are incredible books. Though they have very different plot lines they do have some things in common. Brian is stuck in the wilderness. Roy is trying to save the owls living in the wilderness. Brian is living in the wilderness and so are the owls. Both are basically stuck since Brian has nowhere to go (he doesn't know where he could go). The owls have no other habitat to go to. Their home was being taken away.
I prefer Hoot over Hatchet anytime. Hatchet in my opinion isn't really that interesting while Hoot is. Hatchet doesn't have a lot of dialogue and I prefer books with more dialogue because they are usually way more interesting and have a lot more to the story. Hatchet is mainly focused on Brian as he is the only main character which makes it a little boring since they have only one plot line all about him. Hoot however has two plot lines that connect together which makes it more interesting as well there are many characters. If there's usually one character the story tends to be less interesting in my opinion since with one character there obviously won't be a lot of dialogue.
Overall I thought Hoot is way better of a book than Hatchet but both are amazing books in their own way.
