I think the big idea(s) in Hatchet is:
Using natural resources around you for your supplement of surviving.
I think the author wants to teach us about how to survive alone in the woods by yourself with no experience.

I think the BIG IDEAS in Hatchet is being able to live on your own using the resources around you and what you have, that you can live alone in a Canadian wilderness at any age as long as you always think positive and know what you are doing.
I think the author (Gary Paulsen) wants us to know that as long as you always think positive and always stay calm, you dan live in a Canadian wilderness as long as you get rescued.

Maybe the author is trying to tell us that it is possible to survive in the wilderness if you put your mind to it. If you go with what the sitiation is then maybe like brian you will be able to survive

In my opinion, I think the author is trying to tell us to use the resources that wehave around us, for that might be all that we are able to have, to always think positive or it will weigh you down a long with using back round information that you already know to help you along your journey.

I think the big idea is to stay calm in situations, become a part of nature to live in nature, and use what you have, especially yourself as a tool. Reflect on past knowledge, current knowledge, and what you have learned from expirience.

And like Beezus said, never lose hope, because miracles can happen. I mean, he accidentally left the transmitter on, and was saved after 2 whole months!!

I think that the big idea is to teach how to survive in the wilderness. The author is trying to say it is important to keep on trying and to never give up. For example, when Brian was trying to make a fire he didn't give up even when the fire did not light the first time. He kept trying until he was successful. It is also trying to teach us to stay positive even when everything around you is negative. For example Brian's teacher taught him to focus on the positive and push away the negative.
